The Cutera hair removal system uses a process called selective photothermolysis — delivering precise wavelengths of laser energy that are selectively absorbed by the melanin (pigment) inside the hair follicle. This thermal energy disables the follicle’s ability to produce future hair growth without affecting the surrounding skin tissue. The CoolGlide handpiece, emits a 1064 nm Nd:YAG wavelength that penetrates deeply into the dermis where the hair follicle lives, bypassing the melanin in the skin’s surface — which is why it is safe for darker skin tones.
Sessions typically range from 15 to 60 minutes depending on the size of the treatment area. Most patients describe the sensation as a mild snapping or prickling warmth, which the handpiece’s integrated cooling system helps to minimize throughout the treatment. No anesthesia is required for most areas, though a topical numbing cream can be applied to sensitive regions upon request. Mild redness and slight swelling at the follicle sites are normal in the hours following treatment and typically resolve within 24 hours. Patients should avoid sun exposure and skip shaving for a few days post-treatment.
Laser hair removal is most effective on hairs in their active growth phase (anagen). Hair follicles cycle through growth, regression, and resting phases independently of one another. Therefore, they must be in their active growth phase at the time of treatment which is why a series of sessions is necessary for complete hair reduction. Spacing treatments 4–8 weeks apart ensures that previously dormant follicles are effectively treated building toward comprehensive and lasting clearance with each visit.
Most patients achieve significant, lasting hair reduction after 6–8 treatments, with many noticing a meaningful decrease after just the first two or three sessions. Studies have shown up to 90% permanent hair reduction following a complete treatment course and most patients require only occasional maintenance treatments to address any residual growth.
